Tackle the Important Tasks Early in the Day

The past year at Forge has been full of exciting opportunities for growth — both for us and our clients. As more have come to us for help, we’ve been nearly innundated with work and thus have been consistantly working on methods to give each client the time they deserve, all while allowing enough time in the day for our other obligations.

More often than not, we found ourselves multi-tasking with several projects open at once, bouncing between browser windows while juiced up on caffiene, looking at reports, making changes and suggestions, firing off emails, and the whole rigamorole of running a small business. With the year coming to a close, we actually found that one of our good friends, Leo Babatua of Zen Habits, actually has had it right all along — one thing at time is the way to go.

While we can’t exactly eliminate our to-do lists like he sometimes suggests, we have found it extremely beneficial to sit down and really organize our top priorities and knock those out first thing in the morning — regardless of what they are — then move on to less pressing tasks and issues. In the end, it means we may reply to emails a bit slower, but we get the actual work done a lot faster. It sounds intuitive enough, but we can all agree that tackling that daunting task on your list at 8am is not exactly the most favorable wake-up routine, even if it is the best.

What changes have you and your company made over the past year that have improved your ability to work? We’d love to hear them!
