One of the most under-valued aspects of a pay-per-click campaign is aggressively testing different advertisements and ad copy. Many people will create a list of keywords, slap a single advertisement on the ad group, then hope for the best. One of the largest benefits of using pay-per-click is that you can get daily feedback as to what is working and what isn’t, allowing for highly effective and cost efficient campaigns to be made. What’s more, is there is no penalty for making an array of advertisements and seeing what performs the best, just apathy to do such.

To push the point home, I recently ran a series of advertisements for Forge and conducted several tests to demonstrate just how powerful ad copy is. I began by collecting a very targeted list of keywords relating to pay-per-click management services, which I planned on directing to the Pay Per Click Management page here on Forge’s site. Keep in mind, ad copy isn’t just about attracting clicks but also helping to establish a good quality score. I ran each of the below advertisements one at a time and collected around 50 clicks for each to get fairly accurate statistics.

The first ad I created was rather generic:

{KeyWord: AdWords PPC Professional}
Drive Leads and Sales Today with an
AdWords PPC Professional. Start Now!
www.forgeseo.com/AdWordsPro

Note that this ad does include some best practices such as utilizing a call-to-action (Start Now!), but overall I expected it to get a fairly low quality score as the keywords do not particularly match up with those of Forge’s Pay Per Click Management page. Using a uniform keyword scheme in ads and to the landing page is a common mistake, but intentional in this case for demonstrative purposes.

After setting an appropriate Max Bid value and letting the ad run for a few days, it resulted in a dismal 0.22% Click Through Rate (CTR) on the search engine results page alone (this doesn’t include the Content Network, which in most cases drastically reduces the CTR.) Additionally, the quality score was a horrific “4″, meaning I was not only ranking poorly, but paying more than it needed to.

Alright, a small improvement:

{KeyWord: Pro Adwords Management}
Get Amazing Results You Can Trust &
Start Growing Your Business Today!
www.forgeseo.com/AdWordsManagement

Trying a slightly different direction, I added “management” which is only part of my keyword scheme, in addition to some very exciting ad copy to attempt to draw attention. A few days later the ad was looking at a 0.39% CTR and a quality score of “5″–a minor improvement, but an improvement none the less.

Getting the hang of it:

{KeyWord: Pay Per Click Management}
Hire a Certified Pay Per Click
Manager for Your Campaign Today!
forgeseo.com/{KeyWord:Pay-Per-Click}

This is where I really began to kick in the usage of best practices, along with adding some verbal credibility to the advertisement. You can see the the keyword scheme is in line with my landing page, as well as noting I was a “Certified Pay Per Click Manager,” which is sure to draw more attention and interest than any Joe Schmoe that dabbles in per-per-click advertising. The entire ad copy is one large call-to-action and I added a dynamic URL structure in the display URL to allow for the ad to match up with more queries. Lo-and-behold, the ad received a generous 1.19% CTR and a quality score of “7″.

One Final Adjustment:

{KeyWord: Pay Per Click Management}
Effective Pay Per Click Management
to Grow Your Business. Start Today!
forgeseo.com/{KeyWord:Pay-Per-Click}

Now having lined up not only titles, but the ad copy with the keyword scheme, maintaining a call-to-action, and allowing for dynamic titles and display URLs, this advertisement took the cake with a CTR of 1.64% and maintaining the quality score of “7″. In addition, the cost-per-click of this ad was $0.34 less expensive than the advertisement we started with.

I hope this demonstrates how critical it is to vary your advertisement text, whether it is you or the professional you hired doing such. Good luck!

If you haven’t noticed over the past few weeks, the company blog has been somewhat void of new content while I have been busy restructuring the company. Over the course of the past year, the vast majority of Forge’s new clients (somewhat unsurprisingly) have been companies looking to either overhaul or setup a Pay Per Click campaign.

As has been the case for some time, Pay Per Click campaigns are the definitive and proven way to quickly drive relevant traffic to an array of pages on your website. In addition, I personally find Pay Per Click Management the most enjoyable role to play for my clients as there are often times ridiculous amounts of ROI involved. There are few things that get people more excited than seeing a monthly report with large, green numbers scattered about. After all, more sales or signups means raises for employees, vacations for families, and less worry in a troubled economy.

Unfortunately, in my years of experience I have seen pay per click campaigns placed into the hands of unskilled practitioners and spiral out of control with little to no return. Thus, I cannot caution enough that when you are seeking to employ someone to handle your campaign, be sure to question on them on their experience, credentials, and a measurement of actual ROI that he/she/they have provided to clients in the past. At a glance, Adwords, adCenter and Yahoo! Search Marketing seem like campaign tools that can be easily tackled and handled. However, one must realize that these are programs that offer certifications for a reason–they are as dangerous as they are wildly effective.

The unlimited potential of Pay Per Click is what really fuels my passion for providing the service to my clients. With the right budget, the right research, and a skilled hand, you can create a campaign that not just drives results, but demands more of a business.

If you have any success or horror stories about Pay Per Click, I would love to hear them! And of course, if you would like a no-obligation campaign audit, you can always feel free to contact me.

SEO is not just getting first page rankings or driving traffic, it is about measuring <abbr="Key Performance Indicators">KPIs that are relevant to the business. Unfortunately, the most difficult part about hiring an SEO company is wading through all of the spam, jargon and sales pitches to find a company that will collaborate with you for the long-term to drive results that benefit you. Below we have compiled a list of 8 questions that will determine if the SEO company utilizes proper methods and is a good fit for your company. In addition, we also outline some of the words shady SEO companies use to attract clients.

8 Questions to Ask a SEO Company Before You Sign

What is the history of your company?

Find out how long they have been in business and why they decided to go into the SEO industry. Most importantly, examine the history of the people that will be doing the actual SEO work for you to see if they have a background in SEO and marketing. People with experience have a great advantage in SEO because they know how the industry has changed and are more likely to be versed in what works and what doesn’t.

Who are some of your current clients?

Gather a list of who the company is doing business with and ask for the contact information associated with those clients. Testimonials on a website are great, but speaking with an actual client will give you an insight as to how the company conducts business on a day to day basis and what results have been derived from such.

What KPIs do you use the gauge campaign performance?

The correct answer is that it depends on the website and the business model. The incorrect answer is, “Google rankings and website traffic”. Have the company give examples what metrics they would use to analyze your website in comparison to one of their other current clients.

How do you determine “qualified traffic”?

Driving traffic to your website is useless unless those visitors are actually interested in your product, service, or content. Generally speaking, qualified traffic tends to stay on your website longer and you can measure it partially with the average time they spend on your site and by how much bounce traffic you have. If applicable, they can also use conversions to determine what percentage of your traffic is purchasing from you, which is obviously qualified traffic.

Who is going to do the implementation?

Establish whether the SEO company is going to be working on your behalf, or if they are going to simply create a strategy and have your in-house developers roll it out. Some aspects such as link building may be handled on their end, while on-page optimization may need to be fulfilled in-house. Iron out the details of “who does what” and make sure your contract clearly reflects such.

Does your strategy include Pay-Per-Click campaigns?

Pay Per Click advertising can be greatly utilized in some marketing strategies, but remember that the traffic stops when the advertising stops. Make sure that the company intends to focus on building organic rankings, not paid ones.

What reports will I get and how often?

Having an SEO company working on your behalf isn’t very valuable if you don’t have a consistent flow of reports to inform you of changes in sales, signups, traffic or rankings. Make sure they intend to provide ample documentation of what was done and how it affected your KPIs.

How will my overall Return On Investment (ROI) be measured?

Ensure that the SEO company plans on working closely with you to determine the ROI. It is easy to create vast reports with a lot of metrics, but the bottom line is that the SEO company needs to increase your revenue to the point where they are more than paying for themselves.

Proceed with Caution if You See the Following

If you see any of the following on the company’s website or hear it during discussion, proceed with a great amount of caution – chances are they are trying to trick you or are using shady SEO methods.

“We can guarantee first page rankings.”

Even Google states that no SEO can guarantee first page rankings and that is because they can’t. While it is much easier to achieve first page rankings for some random long-tail keywords, they cannot guarantee that it will happen. Moreover, make sure they are not talking about paid rankings in comparison to organic rankings.

“We work closely with Google.”

Companies that spend enough money with Google are often assigned account representatives that advise on best practices and make sure you are happy with Google advertising. We have been working with a variety of representatives for years, but let it be known that these account representatives have absolutely no control over rankings, neither does anyone at Google. Google account reps cannot be leveraged to increase a campaign’s performance, so don’t be tricked into believing such.

“We can build thousands of inbound links to your site quickly.”

Link building is one of the most tedious, time consuming processes of an SEO campaign. If they claim they can build thousands of inbound links quickly, they are either going to use black hat techniques such as an automated program or buying links, or they are considering legitimate methods such as creating viral content. Clarify how they are building the links before signing anything – getting de-indexed by Google is the last thing you want to happen.

“We have top secret methods for getting high rankings fast.”

There are trade secrets to SEO, only proven methodologies and practices. Transparency is critical when hiring an SEO company, so ensure that they lay out all of their methods and plans in detail.

“We would like the copyright on our SEO work.”

If they ask for the copyright, you should immediately discontinue communication with them. By copyrighting the SEO work they do for you, they can revoke it at any time and cause your website’s rankings to disappear, along with any traffic you once had. You should own full rights to the work completed.

We hope these questions and tips will help you find the SEO company that will work diligently on your behalf and be a wonderful business partner. If you have any comments or suggestions for other questions, please leave them in the comments!

With its debut in August of 2008, Google Insights for Search became a readily adapted research tool by search marketing experts but has remained somewhat of a mystery to the general website or blog owner. Google Insights for Search allows you to see how the popularity of search terms has changed over the years and shows you potential avenues for driving relevant traffic to your website.

Find Rising Trends

When searching for terms relevant to your website, blog, company, industry, etc., Insights for Search will not only show you the relative popularity of your search terms, but it will unveil the most popular and fastest rising searches related to what you entered. Knowing the rising search trends in your industry puts a plethora of untapped search phrase markets at your fingertips. You can continue to drill down into the rising searches to find additional niches that you can target for large traffic increases of relevant visitors.

Target Your Findings

The most immediate way to target and benefit from these newly popular search phrases is through PPC marketing. Within hours of doing your research you can have several, targeted PPC advertisements live on the big search engines. In addition, you will be able to benefit from low cost-per-click values since there is very little bid competition in these markets. The result of targeting the trending terms is a low cost advertising campaign that will direct highly relevant traffic to your website.

In addition to the PPC marketing, you can implement on-page SEO that will establish your website as an authority for these low-competition searches. As the searches gain popularity, so will your website’s traffic. A caveat to on-page SEO is that you do NOT want to start changing your primary SEO keywords every time you want to target a trend. If you change your primary content too much, you can unintentionally damage your current search engine rankings. Instead, write blog posts, continue to link build, and perhaps even add additional pages where appropriate with these new search phrases in mind.

An Example

Below is a quick video that will demonstrate the various features of the tool and a practical example of how you can find and target rising search terms.

Google Insights for Search is a highly valuable research tool when you want to find trends over a few years or a few days. What are some of the interesting trends you’ve noticed in your industry?
